Clomid – fertility drug for ovulation induction

For women with irregular periods, Clomid or Serophene is the brand name of a drug called clomiphene and is the first choice fertility drug for ovulation induction. It’s popular because it is relatively inexpensive low cost can be taken orally. It works by increasing the levels of follicle stimulation hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH) to stimulate more follicles in the ovary – leading to ovulation and regular menstrual cycle.

Depending on your condition, most doctors will have you start with one pill. It’s usually taken for 5 to 7 days beginning at day 3 of your ovulation cycle but it’s best to follow your doctor’s prescription. Many studies show that pregnancy usually occurs during the first three months of infertility treatment. So if you can’t get pregnant after 3 cycles of taking the medication talk to your doctor for further treatment options.

The most common side effect is hot flashes during the time you are taking the medication. Other side effects can include nausea and headaches as well as mood swings, but not all experience this. For most women side effects are minimal.

The alternatives to clomiphene is Letrozole (Femara) and it works in much the same way as Clomiphene. Other point to note about Clomiphene is – up to 8% of pregnancies conceived with Clomiphene can result in twins.

I did and got pregnant in my 4 cycle. My doc told me the slightest sign of blood is counted as day 1. My advice is not to miss any, take them after something to eat at the same time every day. I had very mild side effects.. burning sensation. Good luck!
